ALS — more commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease — is a disease that progressively degenerates nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. During early stages of the disease, sufferers are affected by reduced use of muscles in their arms and legs. Total paralysis occurs as the disease progresses, and eventually the ALS patient can no longer swallow or breathe.
— When I was diagnosed in 1998 with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, Then a physically active 54-years-old... I told the doctor who gave the diagnosis “Doing nothing is not an option,”I wasn't satisfied to sit back and let the disease win.
There are an estimated 5,000 newly diagnosed ALS cases each year, with the disease affecting one in 10,000 people in most parts of the world, according to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. There are nearly 30,000 people presently living with ALS in the United States. today.
Since these numbers are relatively small, compared with the figures for diseases such as cancer and AIDS, it’s been a challenge for organizations to raise money for ALS.
The first few years I designed ALS Angel pins..my family helped make and sell them..We were able to send over $10,000 dollars for research..
Then I came up with the idea of making life size dolls, by this time I was not capable of moving my arms or legs and I am also on the vent..I communicate mostly by computer..not complaining just explaining...From my power chair and bed I have taught family members, nurses, and friends , how to create them..At first they thought I was nuts, but after they started selling, they realized what a good idea it was...We are proud to say we are working on doll # 300..each doll comes named and #..
